The outskirts of Kansas City are incredibly rich in wildlife and produce wonderful field recordings. Transmitting indoors an audio feed of the surrounding wilderness is a pair of omni-directional microphones in the trees mixed with an angled stereo pair of shotguns, capturing the whine of coyotes, dozens of species of birds, bobcat fights, the yelping of foxes, the munching of deer, spooky wind, the majestic lightning storms of the midwest, and, unfortunately for the microphones themselves, a hailstorm.
 Hydrophones dropped into neighboring local lakes and rivers produce intermittent surprises as well.

A microcontroller unit that “talks back” to the speaker by recording up to ten seconds of audio and randomly re-sequencing sampled bits to produce custom chatbot slop in real time. Time and volume controls make for an oddly striking and very fun randomizer. Conversation Piece II is underway, using synthesized vocal modeling.

 The Kalimba is one of my favorite instruments; I was gifted one that was hand-crafted in Africa many years ago for my birthday. This version is electromechanical, with MIDI inputs controlling small solenoids.&#38;nbsp;

One day I realized that my violin-playing mechanics basically boiled down to a bowing motion in my right arm and finger wiggling on my left. If only I could turn that muscle memory into expressive percussive timbres, I thought, so I set about making the violin into a sort of texture drum, with hopefully many more odd violins to come.&#38;nbsp;

A multi-spring reverb unit and instrument that can also be modulated by control voltage.

Cicadas is inspired by the myth of the cicadas who used to be men, as described in Plato’s Phaedrus. This unit is a conjurer of social media nightmares: it multiplies and repeats any audio input into an incomprehensible chattering choir of an echo chamber.
